Details: Based on the discussion we had in class today and using the handouts you were given, prepare your Oral Presentation. You should have it researched and written out in your copy for Monday. If you were absent, here is a summary of the task: CBA 1 – Oral Assessment

 This is a short, two to three minute talk.
 Choose one of the following topics:
A person I admire
My pet
A review of a book or film or television series I enjoyed
My favourite hobby/sport
 You should research and plan your piece over the weekend.
 Write it out in full, if you wish, but you will not be allowed to simply read it out on the day!
 You may use flashcards to help you during your oral presentation.
 If you want to use props, such as a copy of the book you are reviewing, or a photo of your pet, for example, you may do so. However, you must have hard copies of these, printed at home, because we will not be using the projector for the oral presentations.
 Practise in front of family members/friends or record yourself and listen back.
 Keep an eye on the timing. You will not lose marks if your talk is a little longer or shorter than the time allowed, but a thirty second talk, for example, will not score highly.

NB: You will receive a descriptor, rather than a grade, for this piece. It does not count towards your final JC grade. The result will simply be recorded on your Junior Certificate Profile of Achievement.

Things to bear in mind when preparing and delivering your presentation.

1. Organise your thoughts. Arrange them in a logical order. For example, if you are going to talk about a person you admire, begin by giving their name, date and place of birth, for example. Then say why you admire them so much. Give examples which prove your point about their good qualities. End by saying what influence that person has had on your life.
If you are discussing your hobby, say when you first became interested in it, and why. Give a brief description of it. Tell the audience why you enjoy it so much and what you think are the benefits of engaging in this hobby. Tell a story or two that you think your audience would enjoy! Perhaps you might end by encouraging them to consider taking up that hobby too.
2. Introduce your topic clearly.
3. Have a strong ending: ‘Thanks for listening and I hope I have convinced some, if not all of you, to consider watching this series over the mid-term’, for example.
4. Make eye contact with the audience and address them rather than lecturing them. Ask questions/ask for a show of hands if you like.
5. Speak slowly and clearly.
6. Watch some Ted Talks online to see examples of excellent presentations.

We will begin the presentations on Monday the 27th January. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask us! Students will be chosen randomly, rather than in alphabetical order, so be prepared from Day One!
